To sustain our educational system, teacher education reform should produce highly motivated and efficient teachers to fit into every community's social life and enhance their commitments to national goals and development. This paper therefore examines the role of teachers in socio-economic reconstruction based on the teachers’ concept, qualities of a good teacher, teacher education in Nigeria on National Policy on Education, education and social development, and the challenges such as non-professionalization of teaching, poor policy implementation, insufficient knowledge and use of information communication technology (ICT). The paper recommended that there is a need for all Nigerian teachers to be proficient in computer education, the task of improving teachers’ welfare must be addressed, teachers’ salaries should be paid regularly and the Teacher Registration Council of Nigeria should be empowered financially and legally to control and regulate entries into the teaching profession.
