Guidance and counselling are essential for the development of individuals and the progress of society. They play a vital role in preparing citizens to face the challenges of the 21st century and contribute meaningfully to national development. In Nigeria, guidance and counselling are crucial for achieving the nation's aspirations for a free, fair, and self-sufficient society as set out in the national objectives. The guidance counsellor's role is critical in preparing both students and society in general for the opportunities of the 21st century, with a particular emphasis on socioeconomic and political reconstruction. Through a comprehensive approach, counselling aims to instill critical life skills, promote emotional intelligence, encourage interpersonal understanding, and empower individuals to achieve their full potential. It is recommended that the government invest in education and counselling, provide specialized training for counsellors, establish counselling centers in educational institutions, and promote emotional intelligence training. It is also important to extend counselling services to all segments of society through inclusive platforms such as town hall meetings to foster widespread societal transformation and create a better Nigeria.
